Acupuncture Therapy How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old form of health care that, to this day, is used by more people than any other system of medicine. Acupuncture works by balancing the internal energies (“Chi”) that flow through our bodies. When these energies are flowing smoothly and harmoniously, health and well-being are promoted. However, when the Chi becomes blocked or imbalanced (caused by life stresses over time), symptoms of disease result. Acupuncture then, treats the deeper, underlying imbalance, rather than just the symptom. When the underlying imbalance is addressed, not only does the main symptom often resolve, but other areas of a person’s life tend to improve and flourish as well.

What are the Benefits of Acupuncture?

The benefits of traditional acupuncture are far-reaching. Although it is said that “traditional acupuncture does not treat symptoms; it treats people,” the World Health Organization of the U.N. lists over 40 symptoms that acupuncture has been shown to be effective in treating. Some of the more common difficulties that people find relief from, through acupuncture, are:

  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Allergies
  • Insomnia
  • Back pain
  • Depression, anxiety & other emotional concerns
  • Menstrual difficulties
  • Infertility
  • Digestive disorders
  • Addictions
  • Stress
  • Postoperative & chemotherapy nausea
  • Postoperative dental pain
  • Stroke rehabilitation
  • Tennis elbow
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Asthma
  • Spastic colon
  • Low back pain
  • Common cold

In addition to relief of symptoms, some other benefits from treatment often reported are: increased energy and vitality; tend to get sick less often and recover more quickly; deeper and more harmonious relationships with others; a better understanding of oneself, thus better able take care of one’s own health; and a richer quality of life.
